I was walking till office from nehru place when i saw this guy enjoying his afternoon siesta. i was a bit apprehensive as i thought he wont like this intrusion of his privacy but he was so much into sleep that he was totally oblivious to what was happening around and so i clicked...

why i love google earth

The first day when i saw data on google earth i just could'bt believe my eyes. I've always been very fond of satellite imagery and all these years i've desperately searched for maps, images but was never satisfied .

At first it was to much for me to believe that the data was correct but slowly as i explored i realised it was very much authentic Now i'm totally hooked on to google-earth and my area of interests are himalayas, karakorams etc.google earth offers the best way to know the topography, geography of any area. Now i justdont like refering to any atlases. why should i when i have something thats offering me a 3dperspective. and trust me the mountain features, valleys, path of rivers etc you see here are actual scaled replicas. The photographs below prove my point.

The second pic was kind courtesy my dad's when he was posted in valley. after seeing that pic
i thought why not try the same orientation from google earth...
so that was what the first pic was.

The place use see above is Sonamarg which remains cutt of during winters and the river you see is sind. Little ahead lies Zogila pass where the highest tank battle was fought in 47. Also another important place ahead is Baltal , which is the base for starting for Amarnath Cave and from baltal the pilgrimage can be done in a day as opposed to pahalgam which takes 3-4 days.

I even found the place in arunachal where i had stayed for two days just by the topography and later on when i got the coordinates it turned out my judgement was correct :)
Its very easy to locate any place in google earth once you know the coordinates in the form of latitude and longitudes.

Interesting Signs

Saw these interesting signs during my visit to kashmir in 2003
First one was at srinagar war memorial while the second one was next to kargil war memorial little ahead of drass

Trip to Hospital

Though this happened a couple of months back ,still i thought its never to late to pen down...
i had this abscess development taking place on my abdomen. Since i'm a very easy going person i ignored it till the pain became unbearable. so anyways it was a saturday when i decided to visit the base hospital along with my friend megha. b/w we were supposed to go for a movie that day. anyways i was sitting and waiting for my appointment with the doc when Alok uncle who's a gastrointestinal specialist just happened to pass by. I wished him for obvious reasons ;) - so he enquired how come i was there? i told him blah blah...
He straight away took me to the doc and requested him to attend to me. After examining me, he gave me a shock that a minor operation needs to be carried out. i was like oh shit ! as it is meggs was damn pissed with me for not going to the doc initially and now the movie plan was in a jeopardy. i guess i was helpless but when i told her about the operation she was quite supportive and decided to be there at the hospital with me since the minor op involved me being unconscious for a couple of hours. i did'nt think it was necesary to inform my mom - u know how all mom's react!
The attendant came and took me to a room where he asked me to undress and gave me a green robe to wear. I took the dress and gave him a look conveying that i was too shy to undress in front o hm. He understood and replied "look dude! we are short of time so betta hurry up! i was like ok fella! chill!I managed to pull my shirt down enough while changing to cover my dignity! After wearing the green robe i realized there was a cold draft coming in and of all the places it was the rear that had the hole... Worst part was i was paraded to the OT throught the wards where all the patients with their families were presentand guess what meggs was also there to witesss the spectale. . i was walking sideways with my back facing the wall- ppl sure were laughing including megha but at least my dignity was intact but again not for very long as i was heading towards every doctors delight- the operation table.
The doctor came and was generally talking to me . I kept on asking him how long is it gonna take? so on the lighter side he said that if i want i can undergo the operation without any anaesthesia. I thought wow man! this is my chance to prove my bravery. imagine undergoing an operation without any anaesthesia. ppl would introduce me as Arun-the guy who did'nt know what pain was ! i was feeling no less than a decorated soldier and so very casually i replied! ok doc i'm okay with it! I'm sure the doc was taken aback by my reply . He said friend it'll be very painfull as it will be punctured by knives and what not but i was adamant and replied no doc its okay . Doc was silent for a few seconds probably thinking "sallah yeh aisayy nahee manaygaaaa" and the next moment he placed his fingers on my abscess and pressed it gently. man i had never experienced so much pain in such a short duration in fact the pain lingered for a few seconds which to me seeemed like eternity. so very sheepishly i asked him - for how long will i be unconscious. man i swear i could see the smirk on his face .
anyways there was no more arguing and i was shifted . Just like they show in movies, i was placed on a table, those huge dome shaped lights were lit up, and 3-4 faces with their masks on were staring at me. The doc started injecting me with general anaestheia through IV and of course to divert my attention he was talking to me. I dont remember passing out but when i got up the scene was totally different.
The whole world appeared so strange to me. Everything around was spinning , vision was completely blurred, people appeared rubbery with their upper half swaying side ways. At times i would feel as if i was flying through a tunnel. Suddenly i would start laughing hysterically.I remember th nurse coming and asking me to shut up as i was disturbing everyone.I asked her whats happening to me? why am i experiencing all this. she was like "kuch naheee all this is beacuse of the anaesthesia". I was impressed( still cant figure out why) so when the doc boy came i started telling him you guys are amazing! the world of medical science is awesome, kept on saying cool man and was giving everyone a five.i remember receiving some fives also.
This drama continued for some time when the effect started wearing away .Still i had to stay as i was unsteady and could not wak. They later on asked megha to come and sit next to me. By that time i had puked enough and was okay. So while going back megha drove me back. Next day when i got up i thought it was time to do some homework. So i ran a query on google for ketamine that's the anaesthesie i was administered.got to know that it's a central nervous system depressant that produces a rapid-acting dissociative effect.

Psychedelic effects are produced quickly by low doses (25–100 mg) of Ketamine. Higher doses(1 gram or more) can cause convulsions and death

Physical effects: slurred speech, increased heart rate, increased blood pressure, lack of coordination, muscle rigidity, bronchodilation, respiratory distress, paralysis, increased cardiac output (leading to risk of heart attack or stroke), coma, and death.

Psychological effects: hallucinations, dreamlike states, feelings of invulnerability, psychological near-death experiences, paranoia, and
aggressive behavior.

Man this was one experience i would never forget.......
